OpenAI seems to be developing fresh features for ChatGPT that could soon be accessible to users. The AI chatbot will allow developers to publish applications and AI agents directly within the interface, making them readily available to users. This feature may sound familiar, as ChatGPT already enables users to create custom chatbots and list them on the GPT Store. Recent reports from AI enthusiasts Tibor Blaho and TestingCatalog included screenshots of this ongoing project at OpenAI, indicating that a launch could be on the horizon.
Blaho, known for uncovering unreleased features in AI platforms, shared images of this upcoming capability on X. One screenshot reveals a proposed welcome screen that OpenAI plans to use for apps within ChatGPT, suggesting a potential Apps menu in the chat application. The store seems to include various applications, such as Instacart and Gmail. Another screenshot displays a single app listing for Expedia, which resembles mobile app store designs. This listing features screenshots, a description, and an information section. It is anticipated that a Connect button will enable users to link their ChatGPT account with the app for seamless usage alongside the travel service.
When will ChatGPT support third-party apps?
ChatGPT may not only soon offer third-party apps, but also allow third-party developers to publish workflows within the platform, including AI agents that users can choose to integrate into their regular ChatGPT experience. For instance, the blog highlights a feature known as Hermes, enabling developers to craft custom agent workflows using the Agent Builder tool previously announced by OpenAI. These workflows can be published to ChatGPT, each receiving its unique URL. TestingCatalog additionally reports that OpenAI aims to add image generation capabilities to the workflow builder, potentially unveiling a new image generation model.
The ChatGPT 4o image generation model generated significant buzz earlier this year, preceding Google’s releases of the Nano Banana and Nano Banana Pro models. An upgrade to ChatGPT’s image generation features might be due, especially with recent advancements from Google. Furthermore, TestingCatalog hints at the impending support for third-party apps, which OpenAI has announced, and Blaho has identified. Given the leaked screenshots, it appears OpenAI is in the later phases of testing this feature. While the exact launch date remains uncertain, TestingCatalog speculates that OpenAI may introduce these features in a December event akin to last year’s announcement series. In 2024, OpenAI hosted a “12 Days of OpenAI” event leading to Christmas, each day revealing a new AI update.
